Green bin collection for single-family homes is now running in Amherstburg, Kingsville and Leamington, the Phase 2 towns in the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority program. The Town of Amherstburg and the Authority said collection started in the first week of November 2026. Amherstburg's first collection day was Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.
Those three municipalities join Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh and Windsor, where Green Bin collection began in October 2025.
How to set the bin out
Green bins must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day. Collection trucks use automated arms, so placement matters. The Authority's Park-Point-Space method is:
park the bin about 30 cm behind the curb
point the arrows on the lid toward the street, with the wheels toward the house
leave at least one metre of space between the bin and other carts, cars or structures
The Authority collects only the EWSWA Green Bin. Residents who use compostable bags must choose bags that carry the BNQ/BPI certification logos.
Drivers may leave an "OOPS!" or Gold Star sticker on the bin to show how the household is using the program.
Why it matters
The Authority says every household that uses the Green Bin helps extend the life of the region's only local landfill and avoid the high cost of siting a new one. In the first year of Phase 1, residents in Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh and Windsor diverted more than 12,000 tonnes of food waste and organics from the Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill.
Find your day
Residents can check their weekly collection day on their municipal calendar, through the Recycle Coach app, or at ewswa.org. The Authority's customer service line is 1-800-563-3377.
