Three people died after a wrong-way crash on County Road 22 in Lakeshore early Wednesday, Essex County OPP say.
What police say happened
At about 6:07 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, Essex County OPP, the Lakeshore Fire Department and Essex-Windsor EMS were called to a multi-vehicle collision on County Road 22 in the Municipality of Lakeshore, between Manning Road and West Pike Road.
OPP's preliminary investigation found that a vehicle travelling against the flow of traffic struck one vehicle, causing slight damage and no injuries, and then hit a second vehicle head on.
Both drivers in the head-on collision were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A passenger from each of those vehicles was taken by ambulance to Windsor Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries. One of them died. The other was airlifted to London Health Sciences Centre.
Six vehicles were involved in all, OPP said. The other four had light damage, and the people in them were not hurt.
The investigation
The West Region OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team is helping with the investigation. OPP closed County Road 22 between Manning Road and West Pike Road for several hours while officers worked at the scene.
Police have not released the names of the people who died or were injured. OPP has not said what led to the vehicle travelling the wrong way, or whether weather, speed or impairment played a part. The investigation is continuing, and police say they will give updates as they become available.
An early OPP road closure post on X placed the crash in Tecumseh. OPP's updated release says it happened in Lakeshore.
Anyone who saw the collision or has dashcam video of the vehicles involved is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. OPP also asks people not to call police about road closures, since those calls tie up lines needed for emergencies.
