Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario calls financial abuse the most common form of elder abuse. It covers any improper use of an older person's money, property or power of attorney, and in the group's experience most of it is done by family members. The group says studies put elder abuse of all kinds at 8 to 10% of older adults.

The fraud numbers add up too. Seniors 60 and older made up 40.3% of the $643.7 million in fraud losses reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre in 2024. Statistics Canada counted 7,622 senior victims of police-reported family violence in 2024, a rate up 49% since 2018.

Close to home

Windsor Police have a designated elder abuse officer and sit on a local network of agencies working on the problem. Their list of financial warning signs: unusual bank activity, a sudden change in standard of living and overdue bills. A caregiver who always speaks for the person, or never leaves them alone, is another red flag.

Wills and estates

When a will looks wrong, timing matters. The Ontario Court of Appeal confirmed in 2024 that will challenges have a two year limitation period, usually counted from the date of death. Probate files are public court records. In Windsor you can ask at the Superior Court, 245 Windsor Ave. A search costs $11 per file plus $1 a page for copies.
