The Detroit Free Press Marathon crosses the border twice on Sunday, Oct. 18, so Windsor drivers and anyone heading to Detroit should plan around closures for most of the morning.

Windsor-Detroit Tunnel

The tunnel is closed to vehicles from 6:15 a.m. until as late as 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The tunnel's own notice says traffic resumes at 10:15 a.m., while Windsor police list the closure as running to 10:30 a.m., so allow for the later time. Tunnel CEO Tal Czudner told AM800 that anyone heading over for the race should cross before 6:10 a.m.

Ambassador Bridge and Gordie Howe

The Ambassador Bridge stays open, but runners use one side and two-way traffic shares the other, with a buffer lane between them. Race organizers say crossing there may mean delays. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is open as another option.

Windsor roads

The race route in Windsor is closed from about 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The first runners are expected around 7:25 a.m. and the last are expected to enter the tunnel by about 10 a.m. These Windsor streets are closed: Huron Church Road from Wyandotte Street West to University Avenue West; Riverside Drive West from Huron Church Road to Ouellette Avenue; Ouellette Avenue from Riverside Drive to University Avenue East; University Avenue East from Ouellette Avenue to McDougall Street; McDougall Street from University Avenue East to City Hall Square South; City Hall Square South from McDougall Street to Park Street East; and Park Street East from City Hall Square South to the tunnel plaza.

Cheering on the runners

The City, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and the Downtown Windsor BIA are hosting five cheer zones along the route, including Riverside Drive and City Hall Square, for people who want to line the drive.
