Ontario takes on the federal gun ban at the Supreme Court

Appeals of the 2020 firearms ban are set for Nov. 9. Windsor Police opted out of the federal buyback in January.

The Supreme Court of Canada is set to hear appeals of the 2020 "assault-style" firearms ban on Nov. 9. Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan are intervening.

In its filed factum, Ontario argues the ban's undefined "variants or modified versions" wording is unconstitutional. The Toronto Star reports the narrow argument could leave much of the ban in place.

Locally, Windsor Police opted out of the federal buyback in January, citing resources and feasibility. The amnesty now runs until 90 days after the court rules, according to Public Safety Canada (June 9).
